Big Island of Hawaii

Aloha and welcome to beautiful island of Hawaii. This is also called the Big Island. We hope you enjoyed your 10 hour flight. The temperature this evening is a comfortable 80F.

While we are waiting to depart from the plane, here is a little information about the Island. Hawaii was admitted to the Union on August 21, 1959, making it the 50th state. Its capital is Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The state's population according to the US Census Bureau in 2007 was estimated at 1,283,388.

The Big Island is 4,028 square miles (10,432 km²), it is larger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaii is said to be named after Hawaiiloa, legendary Polynesian navigator. He was a hero of an ancient Hawaiian legend. He accidentally stumbled upon the islands. When Hawaiiloa returned to his homeland which he called Ka ʻāina kai melemele a Kane, "the land of the yellow sea of Kane". Hawaiiloa organized an expedition with his family and eight other skilled navigators. They settled on what is now the Island of Hawaii named in his honor.

The Hawaii Island is famous for the active Kilauea volcano. We hope you get a chance to see the volcanoes, the beaches and all the beautiful sites that this great island has to offer.
